It is imperative to understand the underlying reasons in order to stop snoring. At times, deviated septum symptoms or central sleep apnea are the causes behind to snoring.
Deviated Septum
Our nasal cavity is divided into two compartments by a mucous membrane, however, when the septum gets deviated from the central line, deviated septum symptoms tend to originate. It can be related to birth or an injury to the nasal area. It can lead to blockage of nostrils, allergic symptoms, recurrent headaches, sinus infections in addition to snoring. The symptoms which are mild can be managed by antibiotic treatment or use of decongestants but based on severity of symptoms, surgery may be required. A surgeon may carry out submucous resection (SMR) for treatment which involves peeling off of nasal lining from septum in addition to removal of bone or cartilage to replace the lining at the right spot. Another procedure done to reposition the septum is septoplasty that helps straighten the septum as well. Where the SMR needs to be performed under anesthesia, septoplasty can be performed on an outpatient basis and require religious following of postoperative precautions. The symptoms of deviated septum can be greatly eliminated by the right alignment of the septum.
Sleep apnea can be categorized as; obstructive, central and complex sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs as a result of blockage of the airways caused by relaxation of soft tissues at the back of the throat. Central sleep apnea is a disorder of the central nervous system when the brain fails to effectively signal the muscles which control breathing. Complex sleep apnea comprises of both obstructive and central sleep apnea. Sleep apnea symptoms may include noisy snoring, snorting, gasping, choking during sleep and requires prompt medical attention.
